Great Malaysian Movies Not Nominated for Oscars

I think Malaysia doesn't get the respect it deserves as a serious movie making country. I was particularly disappointed to see the Oscar nominations didn't include a nomination for Datuk V. K. Lingam in the category of Best Actor in a (Melo)Drama or a nomination for Mr. Chua Soi Lek in the category of Best Actor in a (Self) Comedy.

Surely Datuk Lingam bragging about his ability to influence the appointment of Judges in Malaysia and Health Minister Chua's personal medical check up of a pretty female voter are Oscar winnable performances?

Equally disappointing is the fact that neither movie made it to the Best Foreign Films category as well. Although I think a movie must be nominated by its national society before it becomes eligible for consideration in the Best Foreign Films category. And with 2 outstanding movies coming out of Malaysia last year, I can see how it was hard to choose between them.

I hope Malaysians don't lose heart over this lack of recognition and continue to produce excellent new movies in 2008 and beyond. I personally can't wait to see what they come up with next.
